Abstract
Investigations on variability estimates, genetic evaluation and correlation between selected characters contributory to solasodine yield in five selected collections of Solanum khasianum Clarke were carried out. The widest range existed for berry yield per plant. High phenotypic, genotypic and environmental variances have also been obtained for berry yield per plant. In all the cases, genotypic variances were higher than environmental variances except for ten berry weight and berry yield per plant. Genotypic coefficient of variability also shown similar trends. Heritability associated with genetic gain was high in all the characters except for ten berry weight and berry yield per plant. Solasodine yield, however, revealed medium heritability accompanied by genetic gain of the same intensity. Simple correlation coefficients showed positive values for all 28 character combinations. Correlation coefficients between solasodine yield and various selected parameters were high. Correlation coefficients worked out at phenotypic, genotypic and environmental levels revealed significant positive, genotypic correlation coefficients between solasodine yield v/s berry yield per plant, no. of flowers per plant, number of berries and leaves per plant respectively. Similar trend was observed for phenotypic correlations as well.
