Reproductive Biology of Three Mangrove Plant Species

Abstract

The present study provides details of the reproductive biology of Bruguiera gymnorrhiza, Avicennia officinalis and Acanthus ilicifolius, B. gymnorrhiza has explosive flowers; pollen release and pollination occur as a consequence of flower-tripping by birds such as Nectarinia asiatica, N. zeylonica and Zosterops palpebrosa. Acanthus ilicifolius is primarily an outcrosser and has a peculiar floral mechanism perfectly adapted to pollination by insects such as Zylocopa latipes, X. pubescens, Rhynchium metallicum and birds such as Nectarinia asiatica and N. zeylonica. Avicennia officinalis has a floral mechanism adapted to autogamy and also to cross-pollinating by flies.
