Abstract

The paper discusses the economic aspect and its linkages of the urban sawmilling industry of Bangladesh. A sample of 203 sawmills consisting of 169 in group-I (timber business and servicing) and 34 in group-II (only servicing) was considered for the study. The purpose of the study is to bring out the detailed information relating to various aspects, e.g., production, investment, capital-output ratio, benefit-cost ratio, internal rate of return (IPR) and other linkages which will help to identify the factors influencing the production and employment opportunities. The per mill value added to the national income at the current sawing rate is US$ 22.01 million annually. There are about 26000 technical and non-technical employees engaged in the urban sawmilling sector. The IPRs for group-I and group-II are found to be 18% and 34% respectively.
