Abstract
The genetic diversity in Rosewood is the most important character to be considered for its genetic improvement to delineate superior varieties. The natural diversity of Dalbergia present in nature offers a rich germplasm for future selection and breeding to evolve highly decorative veener producing quality timber. About 110 accessions or provenance collections of Dalbergia latifolia and about 60 provenance collections of other Dalbergia species from Western Ghats of Karnataka region has been made. An attempt has been made to study the genetic variation in different species and populations of Dalbergia in their natural stands. Dalbergia latifolia, the Indian Rosewood, from different provenances show a significant degree of variation in morphology, growth, wood anatomy and acclimatization to different eco-system.
‘Plus’ trees selection in Indian Rosewood from different bio-regions of Karnataka had been made to identify genetically superior stocks for future breeding programme. The preliminary provenance trial undertaken in Rosewood is in progress.
Sporadic attempts were made quite successfully to maintain genetic stock of superior elites by inducing root suckers.
