Abstract
The effect of different temperatures and substrates on germination and growth of seedlings of Anthocephalus chinensis, a fast growing tree, were tested. The germination percentage recorded at 6 weeks was found to be significantly higher at 320C than that at 240C and 280C and germination also commenced earlier at 320C. Soilrite-perlite (10:1) as substrate gave highest germination, but at par with that of sand Mean shot length and mean number of leaves were also found to be high on this substrate. Growth of seedlings were observed to be best at 280C, but did not show any significant difference with that at 320C. Filter paper and absorbent cotton was not found suitable for germination as compared to other two substrates, i.e., sand and soilrite-perlite.
