Abstract
Cold and hot water leaf extracts of plant species comprising horticultural crops, weeds, forage crops and medicinal plants at 5 per cent (group I) and forest plants at 10 per cent (group II) were tested against brinjal damping off pathogen, Pythium aphanidermatum (Eds.) Fitz. By poisoned food technique. None of the leaf extracts gave complete inhibition of the pathogen. However, in the group I of plants maximum percentage of inhibition was obtained with cold water extracts of Polyalthia longifolia (56.6 per cent). Desmodium purpureum and Mangifera indica did not show any inhibitory effect. Among the hot water extracts tested, Patthenium hysterophorus gave maximum mean inhibition of 48.3 per cent. D. purpureum was least effective (2.7 per cent). In the group II of plants cold water extracts of Caesalpinia pauciflora were highly inhibitory (85.5 per cent) followed by manilkara kauki (78.8 per cent). Berrya cordifolia did not show inhibitory effect. Hot water leaf extract of Eucalyptus microtheca showed 90 per cent inhibition, while Spathodea campanulata was least effective.
