Abstract

Water quality of famous Nainital lake is deteriorating due to exogenous addition of municipal and domestic waste rich in organic and inorganic substances, as a result of increase human settlement (+37% in last decade) on its catchment area and regular and frequent visit of innumerable tourists which has increased considerably during last few years.

The study was conducted to examine the percentage degradation in water quality of Nainital lake from last decade (1981-1991). The lake water was highly polluted and contained high among of BOD, free CO2, NH3-N, hardness, silicate except DO during 1991 as compared to 1981. The percentage degradation in water quality parameters from 1981-1991 for B.O.D., NH3-N, free CO2, Silicate, DO, and harness was in the order of 2204.7 > 679.38 > 295.90 > 50.74 > 9.55 > 6.61 respectively.

Most of the physic-chemical characteristics observed in 1991 were beyond the standard permissible limits of drinking water and thus appears that the water of this lake is unfit for human and cattle consumption.
