Ecological Status of Shorea robusta in Lateritic Region

Abstract

The distribution of vegetation in Sal (Shorea robusta) forest of the lateritic region of Midnapore, West Bengal was studied in order to evaluate the ecological status of the area. Out of the 56 tree species detected S. robusta appears to be the most gregarious one, IVI values ranging from 164.50 to 200.41. The ecological success of the associated species is very small as such little dilution of Sal forests could be recorded. The ground vegetation is very thin with 84 species dispersed all over the area surveyed. The Sal forest of this region presents a unique characteristic showing combining features of “Dry” and “Moist” Sal – the former being reflected in its quality and ground cover and the latter in its purity.
