Abstract

The algal flora of the Sikkim Himalaya has been studied relatively to a lower magnitude compared to the other parts of India. Except the Sikkim Himalaya, so far the distribution of 52 species of the algal genus Bulbochaete C.A.Agardh from various other parts of India has been confirmed. The present study, for the first time, reports the occurrence and distribution of two species of the genus Bulbochaete namely, Bulbochaete  intermedia De Bary ex Hirn and B. nana Wittrock ex Hirn from the Sikkim Himalaya. The plant materials were collected from a clean waterbody of Thangu valley, North Sikkim where the water temperature varied from 3.0-8.0°C with pH 6.4. An illustrated systematic account of the two species B. intermedia and B. nana has been provided in the present paper.
