Abstract

An ecological reconnaissance of Kulathupuzha and adjoining forest areas was made with reference to the populations of large and medium size mammals and various human interactions. Seventeen species of large and medium sized mammals were observed during this investigation. Abundance of these mammals in various sample survey plots was analysed. Kulathupuzha forests has a good representation of peninsular Indian Mammals, including the lion-tailed macaque (Macaca silenus). Forest plantations, forest fire, cattle grazing, fire-wood collection, encroachment and poaching were the major problems of maintenance and management of forest and wildlife in the area.
