Abstract
The paper provides the useful scientific information on form, structure and ecology of equatorial rain forests of Riau (Central Sumatra). The study was undertaken for an area of 6,139 ha. and the vegetation was mapped and classified according to eco-system. A scheme of vegetation classification for the area has been developed and presented diagrammatically. Also the cross section of the region depicting the land forms and landscape are provided. A profile diagram of a representative tropical lowland wet evergreen rain forest is presented to understand the complexity and nature of such forests. The designations and symbols for various forest types have been provided. The study will be useful for future studies and management of tropical rain forests.
