Abstract
A study was conducted to evaluate effective methods for the management of coppice sal in the lateritic region of W. Bengal. The optimum time for shoot reduction at various months of the coppicing season (November to March), effect of multiple shoot reduction, effect of application of fertilizer in trenches and effect of contour trenching at different intervals have been compared to assess the suitable management practices for higher yield. The results indicate that the selection of the best time (February) of reduction of coppice shoots, maintaining three shoots per stool, contour trenching at 10 m intervals are the best management practices applicable to the lateritic region of West Bengal. Application of fertilizer being a capital intensive process is not recommendable though significant results have been obtained.
