Abstract
Studies were made on the effect of auxins on rooting non-leafy semi-hardwood and leafy-softwood branch cuttings taken from flowering and vegetatively growing plants of ashvagandha. All the untreated control as well as auxin treated leafy softwood and non-leafy semi-hardwood cuttings taken from flowering plants, and only the semi-hardwood branch cuttings taken from plants which were still in vegetative growth phase failed to root. Leafy softwood cuttings of vegetatively growing plants exhibited fairly high rooting potential; treatment with 100 mg/l indole acetic acid stimulated rooting and per cent survival of rooted cuttings but its 1000 mg/l concentration and all the other auxin treatments which were tried either failed to elicit any response or inhibited rooting. Possibilities of use of auxin for rooting branch cuttings to raise clonal crops of ashvagandha have been discussed.
