Abstract

Models at early phase of tree development now-a-days are getting importance as a research and management tools. Looking to the need a linear (empirical model) and non-linear (process oriented theoretical) models for timber value of young Eucalyptus tereticornis trees have been evaluated for the data set consisting of 137 trees. Linear models, though simple mathematically and satisfying all statistical assumptions, suffered from the problem of outliers. The proposed growth process based models, outperforms the linear models for precision and validation criteria. The model for prediction of timber volume based on D2H and D as the case may be has been proposed where D is the diameter at breast height and H the total height. These are Vol=0.11* [1-exp{-.0053*D2H}] [1/(1-169)] and Vol = 0.077 [1+exp(4.33-0.45*DBH)]-1.
